PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the energy absorbing characteristic of an expansion type cushion by a detonating device selectively operated to rupture a vent plug so that an expanding gas can be selectively ventilated through a vent hole. SOLUTION: A detonating device 80 is embedded and molded within a vent plug 70. The detonating device 80 comprises a small filament which generates heat, when it receives an electric impulse, to ignite a pyrotechnic material, and an explosion is caused from this ignition to rupture the vent plug 70. During the explosion of the pyrotechnic material, a base plate 20 and the vent plug 70 are compressed by the explosive force. Since the base plate 20 is made of a high strength material, and the vent plug is made of a low strength material, the vent plug 70 is ruptured. A vent hole 22 is exposed by the rupture of the vent plug 70, whereby an escape passage for expanding gas is formed, and the energy absorbing characteristic of an expansion type cushion is thus controlled.
