PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress lowering of starting properties even when a refrigerant used in a rotary compressor forms a carbon dioxide refrigerant. SOLUTION: A compression means 12 consists of a front stage compression element 20 and a rear stage compression element 30 and the means are intercoupled through a coupling pipe 43 to perform multistage compression. Further, an intake pipe 21 and a discharge pipe 32 are intercoupled through a coupling pipe 41, and an on-off valve 42 is located in the middle of the coupling pipe 41. Further, discharge pipes 22 and 32 are intercoupled through a coupling pipe 44 and an on-off valve 45 is located in the middle of the coupling pipe 44. The on-off valves 42 and 45 close the coupling pipes 41 and 44 when a power is fed to a motor 11, and when a feed to the motor 11 is stopped, the coupling pipes 41 and 44 are opened. This constitution suppresses lowering of starting properties as a result of all pressures in the intake pipes 21 and 31 and the discharge pipes 22 and 32 being all the same as each other when a rotary compressor is stopped.
