PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To not stretch a filter medium by excess force and to not generate strain on the filter medium even, though the filter medium is exposed to high temperature steam for sterilization, in the filter element for treating various chemical liquids and pure water. SOLUTION: A polypropylene-made porous inner cylinder 12 and outer cylinder 13 which are inserted into the inside and the outside of the cylindrical filter medium 11 obtained by laminating a shape keeping material such as a polyester net material on both surfaces of porous thin films consisting of polyamide or polysulfone, are vertically divided into two parts, and a space is made between the upper and lower cylinders, and the upper and lower inner cylinders 12 are housed in a container 17 after end plates 14A, 14B are fixed to the upper and lower ends while flat engaging pieces 15c provided on both upper and lower sides of a connection element 15 are engaged and connected to through holes 12a of respective inner cylinders so as to have a space in the vertical direction. When high temperature steam is passed into the container 17 for sterilization, the inner and outer cylinders 12, 13 having large expansion coefficient are made to enable to freely expand without any relation to the filter medium 11, thus the filter medium 11 is not stretched by excess force.
