PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method for an aluminum base material and an aluminum alloy base material capable of imparting corrosion resistance equal to or above that by chromate treatment with a treating soln. which does not contain chromium, improving the adhesion with a coating film and also capable of sufficiently realizing the brightness of aluminum, and to provide a coated article with metallic luster on the surface coated by this coating method. SOLUTION: As to this coating method for an aluminum base material and an aluminum alloy base material, an aluminum base material or an aluminum alloy base material is treated with an acidic soln. of pH 0.6 to 2.0 contg. 0.2 to 0.4 g/L ferric ions and sulfuric acid and is thereafter subjected to chemical convertion treatment with an acidic coating film chemically treating soln. of pH 1.5 to 4.0 contg. 0.01 to 0.125 g/L zirconium ions or titanium ions, 0.01 to 1.0 g/L phosphoric ions and 0.01 to 0.5 g/L fluorine ions, and, after that, coating is executed.
