PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a coating apparatus suitable for coating a formed product with a light weight such as a Daruma tumbler by installing a liquid level sensor in an upper part of an elevating coating tank and installing a return means for turning a slide base back to the initial position. SOLUTION: When the liquid level of a coating material is elevated while a coating tank 45 being elevated and an object to be coated being immersed in the coating material, the elevation of the coating tank 45 is detected by a liquid level detection sensor 48 installed above the tank and, at the time when the liquid level reaches a prescribed liquid level position, the detection signal is sent to a control part 28. The control part 28 stops the elevation in the elevating operation of an elevating cylinder 44 by the detection signal and moves the cylinder 44 down to keep the immersion depth of the object in the coating material constant independently of the amount of the coating material in the coating tank 45. After that, a slide base 30 is led to the terminal of a horizontal movement range and a detection signal is sent to the control part 28 when the slide base 30 is detected by a movement detection sensor 37 to turn off an intermittent clutch and at the same time to operate a return cylinder 40 to turn the slide base 30 back to the initial position.
