PURPOSE:To obtain the face of weld of high quality by maintaining buildups produced on the surface and rear of the face of weld of sheet metals at the time of performing laser beam welding in the specified range to make these uniform. CONSTITUTION:When a butt part of the sheet metals W is irradiated with a laser beam LB from a laser beam machining head 11 which is moved along a butt line of the butt part to perform laser beam welding on the sheet metals W, buildups WC and WD produced on the surface and rear of the face of weld of the sheet metals W are detected by respective sensors 21U and 21D and based on this detected buildup state, the feed rate of the laser beam machining head 11 and the output of the laser beam are controlled so that the buildups WC and WD are always maintained in the specified range. |
