PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compounds in a high yield by reaction between α-hydroxyalkylacrylic esters and alcohols. SOLUTION: The compounds of formula III (e.g. α-hydroxymethyl-γ-pentyl-γ- butylolactone) are obtained by reaction between (A) α-hydroxyalkylacrylic esters of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H or an organic residue) (e.g. α- hydroxymethylacrykic acid, methyl α-hydroxymethylacrylate) and (B) alcohols of formula II (R3 and R4 are each H or an organic residue) (e.g. methanol, cyclopentanol) pref. in the presence of, as a catalyst, an organic peroxide such as 1,1-bis (t-butylperoxy)cyclohexane, 1,1-bis(t-butylperoxy)-2-methylcyclohexane or di-t-butyl peroxide; wherein in the early stage of the reaction, the molar ratio: A/B is pref. (2:1) to (1:50). |
