PURPOSE:To obtain a large contrast ratio and good steepness and to reduce a driving voltage by embedding a liquid crystal layer in a layer formed in fine ruggedness structure on at least one substrate with an electrode. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal element device is constituted by holding the liquid crystal layer 4 between a couple of substrates 1 and 2 provided with liquid crystal driving electrodes and is changed between a light scattering state and a light transmitting state according to whether or not a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer 4, and a liquid crystal device 4 is embedded in the layer formed in the fine ruggedness structure 9 on at least one electrode substrate. This fine ruggedness structure 9 is a striped structure having a 1-10mum pitch. Nonlinear switching elements are provided corresponding to respective picture elements to the substrate on the opposite side from the substrate in the fine ruggedness structure which controls the thickness of the liquid crystal layer. This fine ruggedness structure serves also as a flattening layer or a protective layer for the nonlinear elements, etc. |
