PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply galvanizing or galvannealing on a metallic material and thereafter to produce a protective film on this plating. SOLUTION: As to this metallic surface treating method, by executing electrolysis with a galvanizing or galvannealing bath contg. zinc, electrically conductive salt and at least one kind selected from the group composed of a silicon compd., an aliphatic amine or a polymer thereof, an alkylene oxide-added compd., a carboxylic compd., a polyvinyl alcohol and the like, and, in the case of the alloy plating, moreover contg. at least one kind selected from the group of iron, cobalt, nickel, tervalent chromium, copper, manganese, aluminum and tin, a substrate is applied with plating of a desired thickness, and after that, by a water base liq. compd. contg. at least one selected from the group composed of Li, Mo, W, V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Ce, Sr, Fe, Ni, Al, Si, Co, Be, Mg, Ca, Ba and tervalent chromium, a protective film is formed on the galvanizing or galvannealing.
