PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect the resisdual quantity of paper sheets in a paper sheet tray at an accuracy of one piece unit. SOLUTION: A picture image forming decice, for feeding paper sheets one by one to a carrying path 14 from paper sheet trays 151, 152, and 153 to form a picture image on the paper sheet at a picture image C forming position on the path 14, is equipped with a counting means for the number of supplying paper sheets for counting the number of paper sheets supplied to paper sheet trays 151, 152, and 153, a counting means for the number of fed paper sheets for counting the number of paper sheets fed from the trays 151, 152, and 153; and a paper sheet residual quantity calculating means for calculating paper sheet residual quantity in the trays 151, 152, and 153, based on a counted result by the counting means for the number of supplying sheets and that by the counting means for the number of fed paper sheets.
