PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high frequency induction hardening method and apparatus, by which a hardened metallic member having good surface characteristic is obtd. without forming oxide layer. SOLUTION: A hardening liquid 4 is fed to a treating part 9 through an outlet 7 and pipe 8, and gaseous nitrogen is blown from a pipe 11 and a bubbling is executed to execute the removing treatment of dissolved oxygen, and the hardening liquid 4 after removing the dissolved oxygen, is supplied into a vessel 3 from inlet 10. Relating to a gear 1 on a laying table 5 the surface thereof is heated with a high frequency induction coil 2 in the hardening liquid after removing the dissolved oxygen, and after heating to a prescribed temp., the gear 1 is shifted downward from the position of the high frequency induction coil 2 with an elevating/lowering means 6 and cooled in the hardening liquid 4 after removing the dissolved oxygen to execute the hardening treatment.
