PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a transition metal catalyst excellent in reaction activity and selectivity in a hydroformylation reaction of epoxide derivative, and also easy to recover and regenerate, by constitution it of a specific transition metal compound or the like. SOLUTION: This transition metal catalyst comprises a transition metal compound containing a cyclopentadienyl group of formula I or II [M is cobalt wherein the oxidation number corresponds to monovalent or trivalent; (a) is e.g. a group BF4-; 1 is e.g. 0 to 2, when (a) is a monovalent anion or the like; m is e.g. 0, 2 or 4, when (a) is a monovalent anion or the like; R1 to R5 are each H, F or the like; (a) to c are each 0 to 3 and a+b+c=3; X to Z are each carbon monoxide or the like; Xa' is OH or the like; Yb' is Cl or the like], or comprises a compound synthesized by reacting the above-mentioned transition metal compound with a compound having one or more acting groups [e.g. the formula IrCp*Cl2PPh2CH2CH2CH2CH2PPh2IrCp*Cl2 (Cp is pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; Ph is phenyl)].
