PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a portable mobile phone that can automatically suppress production of a ring tone or the like at a public place without imposing a load on a user of the mobile phone. SOLUTION: This portable mobile phone is set to a usual mode (step S101). When the system for controlling the operation mode of the portable mobile phone detects the passing of the portable mobile phone, the system transmits (designates) an operating mode to the portable mobile phone in response to the passing direction of the portable mobile phone based on the result of the detection. When the portable mobile phone receives a signal 33 denoting the operating mode, this operating mode is discriminated (step S102), and the portable mobile phone is set to the operating mode denoted by this signal (step S106). Upon receipt of a signal 99 denoting release of a set mode (step S107), the mobile phone is restored to the usual operating mode.
