PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make noise existing in a highlight part of an image visually less distinct and to secure an intermediate tone of the image and resolution of a shade part by smoothing image information on the basis of extracted lightness information. SOLUTION: Parts of image data to be inputted are transmitted to a lightness information extraction part and other parts are transmitted to a smoothing processing part 5. In the lightness information extraction part, the image data are HVC converted and lightness information is extracted. The smoothing processing part 5 has a smoothing processing part 7 for smoothing image data VI to be inputted, a lightness decision part 8 for deciding a lightness level of lightness information Y and an output selector 9 for selecting output data on the basis of a decision result from the lightness decision part 8. When the image data VI are inputted to the smoothing processing part 5, the image data VI are first divided into two, one part is directly transmitted to and part of the rest is transmitted to an output selector 9 by way of the smoothing processing part 7. |
