PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent noise characteristics. SOLUTION: A carbon base film 2 is formed on a substrate 1, on which a perpendicular magnetic film 4 having the axis of easy magnetization aligned perpendicularly to the substrate is formed. The carbon base film 2 is formed to >100Åand <=1,000Åthickness. The perpendicular magnetic film 1 consists of one of alloys of Co/Cr, Co/Cr/Pt, Co/Cr/Ta and Co/Cr/Pt/X-systems (wherein X is one or more elements of Ta, Zr, Cu, Re and B). Moreover, a nonmagnetic intermediate film 3 having a hcp structure is formed just under the perpendicular magnetic film 4.
