PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent overcharge, to improve safety and to enhance energy density by including a redox shuttle overcharge controlling agent in a nonaqueous electrolyte and by installing a thermo-sensitive switch or thermo- sensitive sensor. SOLUTION: A compound expressed by the formula can be offered as a redox shuttle overcharge controlling agent. In the formula, X is a halogen. The compound is suitable for a redox shuttle of a battery having an oxidation- reduction potential of around four volts, its oxidation seed and reduction seed are chemically stable, and its battery performance is never degraded by a side- reaction. Its effect on a solvent characteristic of an electrolyte is small and its movement in the electrolyte is good as well. The compound is used as an oxidation-reduction reagent for protecting the battery because it consumes an overcharge current in overcharge. A thermo-sensitive switch or thermo- sensitive sensor detects the heat radiated from the battery, generates an alarm of an overcharge state and stops charge by itself or by interlocking with a facility installed together with it. |
