PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect the kind or quality of paper to automatically set a printing condition. SOLUTION: In a printer 100, when the printing paper 112 taken out of a paper cassette 101 is passed through a paper quality detecting sensor 103 by a paper feed part 102, the printing paper 112 is irradiated with light and a ratio of the TE wave component and TM wave component of reflected light is calculated and the kind of the printing paper is discriminated on the basis of this ratio and a printing condition is set on the basis of the kind of the printing paper. A photosensitive drum 104 charged by a charger 105 is irradiated with laser beam from a light source unit 106 and desired printing image data is drawn on the drum and a proper amt. of the toner 108 in a developing device 107 is bonded to the drum on the basis of the set printing condition, and the toner is transferred to the printing paper 112 by a transfer device 109 and fixing treatment is performed only for a proper time on the basis of the set printing ?condition by a fixing device 110 to form printed matter which is, in turn, discharged to a paper receiving tray 111. |
