PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collimating plate capable of providing coHimated light that is made sufficiently convergent so that the angle at which the light intensity is 50% is within±15 deg., the plate having a good contrast ratio over a wide angle of visibility and providing a 1iquid crystal display suitable for use as the monitor of a medical diagnostic device and to provide a backlight system using the same. SOLUTION: This backlight system comprises a collimating plate 20 having transparent support 22, a number of light-transmitting spheres 24 each partially contacted with and secured to the support 22, and a light passage blocking part 27 for blocking the passage of light in areas other than a light-transmitting portion consisting of the portion of contact between the support 22 and the spheres 24 and nearby areas. In this case, the backlight system has a housing optically closed by the collimator plate and having an inner surface provided with a reflection characteristic.
