PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to instantaneously judge whether on not the part is a part that has undergone a wrong recognition allowable processing by displaying the character string retrieved out of a document image in different ways between both cases where the retrieved character string is wrongly recognized or not respectively. SOLUTION: The character string that is retrieved out of a document image is displayed in different ways between both cases whore the retrieved character string is wrongly recognized and wrongly recognized respectively. This retrieval device consists of a retrieval character string indicating part 10, a data base 11 which stores an image and the recognition result of the character string contained in the image with relationship secured between them, a retrieval part 12 which retrieves a character string with respect to the recognition result and a retrieval result display part 13. The character string is retrieved from the recognition result stored in the data base 11, the coordinates of the document image are calculated from the fitting position of the retrieved character string and it is detected that the anti-wrong recognition processing is applied when the character string is retrieved, and the position of the retrieved character string is shown in different colors or forms according to the anti- wrong recognition processing result.
