PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and structure for fusion splicing of optical fibers whereby optical fibers with different clad outside diameters can be easily and surely connected together by fusion. SOLUTION: A small diameter part 28 is formed in which a clad 24 at an end 21 including a longitudinal end face of a second optical fiber 20 is machined to reduce the clad outside diameter. The small diameter part 28 is formed so that the clad outside diameterϕ1 on the end face 16 of the first optical fiber 10 is equal to the clad outside diameterϕ21 on the end face 26 of the second optical fiber 20. With the axes 12A, 22A of the first and second optical fibers 10, 20 aligned, the end face 16, 26 are brought close to each other and heated in that condition so that the end faces 16, 26 are melted and butted together. The first and second optical fibers 10, 20 are fused and integrally connected together by similarly melting their respective portions near the end faces 16, 26. |
