PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal element which is provided with practical brightness, fast response, besides a controllable gray scale and improved moving picture quality without using a complicated circuit. SOLUTION: A chiral smectic liquid crystal, which exhibits phase transition sequence of isotropic phase-cholesteric phase-a chiral smectic phase corresponding to lowering of the temperature, is held between a pair of substrates, at least one of which is subjected to uniaxial alignment treatment and is aligned, so as to exhibit a monostabilized state under application of a voltage to exhibit the first transmissivity caused by tilt of the liquid crystal molecules under application of the voltage with the first polarity and to exhibit the second transmissivity smaller than the first transmissivity caused by their reversed tilt under application of the voltage with the second polarity. Then a frame period is divided into one voltage application period with the first polarity and the other voltage application period with the second polarity longer than the former one so as to attain an element which displays a gray scale between the transmissivity exhibited in the monostabilized state and the maximum value of the first transmissivity.
