PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the device and method suitable for a plasma display panel, etc., which reduce false outlines generated in a moving picture area of an image when an image of one field is divided into multiple subfield images to make a gradational display. SOLUTION: The display device which makes a gradational display by using multiple subfields is equipped with a gradation limiting/error diffusing circuit 17 which converts the gradations of an input image to specific gradations where moving picture false outlines are hardly generated or their intermediate gradations and diffuses the error between the converted gradations and unconverted gradations to peripheral pixels and a dither circuit 19 which generates a video signal for displaying the gradations converted by the circuit 17 in alternate even and odd fields. The dither circuit 19 generates the video signal for alternating specific gradations by a dither quantity above and below a converged gradation when the converted gradation is a dither gradation.
