摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field electron emission surge absorbing element capable of effectively preventing emitter cones from melting when a high-voltage surge is impressed thereon and prevented from causing deterioration in surge absorbing characteristics and damage to the element. SOLUTION: In this field electron emission surge absorbing element 10, a first substrate member 12 made up of an N-type semiconductor and having a multiplicity of emitter cones 20 integrally formed with one surface thereof and a second substrate member 14 are disposed opposite to each other leaving a specified distance between them, an envelope 18 is formed by airtightly sealing up inner-surface peripheral parts of the two substrate members by means of a frame member 16, a high vacuum is produced within the envelope 18, and external electrodes 26, 28 are formed on outer surfaces of the two substrate members, respectively. In the first substrate member 12 with the emitter cones 20 formed, the resistance value of a surface layer 22 including the emitter cones 20 is adapted to be higher than that of portions other than the surface layer 22.
