A mammary gland pump (5) including a mammary gland receiving unit (46) configured to fit the mammary gland of a subject, wherein the mammary gland receiving unit is in suction communication with a vacuum source (20), the suction being controlled by a microprocessor (50) controlled electro-mechanical valve (30) for simulating natural suckling patterns of infants, is provided. A method is also provided for obtaining mammary fluid from the mammary gland of a subject by contacting the mammary gland with a suction source which provides a non-nutritive, and nutritive suckling pattern, wherein the non-nutritive pattern causes fluid let-down in the mammary gland.
