The method involves converting a digital values by varying a basic pulse width using a pulse width modulator and a subordinate filter for forming an average value in an analog form. Here the bit format of the digital value is large than the provided bit resolution of the pulse width modulator. The digital value corresponds to the bit number of the bit resolution of the pulse width modulator, before the input into the pulse width modulator, into a component of the higher order bits, and is subdivided a component of the low order bits. The bit number which corresponds to the number of remaining bits for the bit value of the component of the more higher order bits determines the basic pulse width. For the selection of the pulse width modulator, a number (2m) of cycles of same duration with an entire period duration is formed in accordance with the sum of the cycles, where m denotes the number of the low order bits. The duration of the individual cycles remains a pulse width which is produced by modulating the basic width.
