The cursor movement method converts the movement of the user's hand or head into a corresponding movement of the cursor, by detecting the movement of a control device in a coded IR field, provided by IR diodes positioned around the edge of the monitor screen, using an IR receiver (10) with automatic gain control, incorporated in the control device. Each IR diode provides an IR signal within a respective time window, with modification of the IR level via the control device and evaluation of the corresponding output signals provided by a peak value detector (16) at the output of the receiver, for calculation of the position information. An Independent claim for a cursor control device for a computer monitor is also included.
