PURPOSE: A muffler for internal combustion engine is provided to achieve an improved output of engine and reduced exhaust noise while allowing an exhaust gas to smoothly flow. CONSTITUTION: A muffler(30) comprises an inlet unit installed to a housing(32) of the muffler and which allows exhaust gas to flow in through an inlet pipe(34), an exhaust guide unit of a U-shaped pipe(36) having a lower pipe(42) separated from the inlet pipe and an upper pipe(44) positioned at a vertical line from the inlet pipe, the upper pipe and the lower pipe being disposed integrally, an exhaust member integrally connected to the exhaust guide unit so as to allow exhaust gas to be discharged through an outlet pipe(38), and an open/shutoff member having a valve plate(40) installed to be rotatable at a hinge axis within the muffler housing and installed between the inlet pipe and the lower pipe to be rotatable at a hinge axis, the open/shutoff member opens/shuts according to an exhaust air pressure.
