PURPOSE: A method for preparing 4-nitrodiphenylamine from carbanilide is provided, with high selectivity and yield and without generating corrosive and harmful by-products by using a relatively cheap alkali base. CONSTITUTION: 4-nitrodiphenylamine is prepared by reacting carbanilide with nitrobenzene in a polar organic solvent in the presence of a base and a desiccant. Preferably the base is selected from NaOH, NaH, KOH, t-butoxy potassium, Ca(OH)2 and CaH2; the desiccant is selected from anhydrous K2CO3, anhydrous Na2SO4, anhydrous MgSO4, NaOH, KOH, NaH and molecular sieve; and the polar organic solvent is selected from dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, nitrobenzene, and aniline. Preferably the reaction is carried out at the temperature of 20-150 deg.C and in the atmosphere of oxygen, nitrogen or air.
