The water heater has a combustion chamber (2) mounted in a reservoir (1) and fitted with a burner (3) and connected to an exhaust gas pipe (4) passing vertically through the reservoir. The burner can be thermally coupled to a heating body arrangement (11) and a consumption water line (15). The heating body arrangement is connected via feed and return lines (9,10) to the highest or lowest region of the reservoir and the consumption water line is supplied by a secondary heat exchanger (16), whose primary branch (20) is connected via reservoir feed and return lines (21,22) to the highest and lowest regions of the reservoir.
