PURPOSE: An automatic fingerprint recognition system using a direct ridge extraction is provided for directly extracting various features of a personal fingerprint separated from others by following the formed direction of a fingerprint ridge based on an obtained running direction. CONSTITUTION: In an automatic fingerprint recognition system, a unclear portion of a fingerprint obtained using a semiconductor type fingerprint input unit is removed in a pre-processing process capable of adjusting to a proper gray-level value. In a feature extraction process, a feature is extracted based on a direct ridge running trace from the fray-level image, and a feature of the unclear portion among the extracted features is removed. The obtained features are matched with the features of the previously registered fingerprint for thereby computing a similarity, whereby it is judged whether the fingerprints are same.
