<p>A heat exchanger (1) has a single piece extruded body (3) of a thermally conductive material such as aluminium. The body (3) has a central conduit (3e) with extensions (3a, 3b) extending outwardly through head sections (2a, 2b). A cooling fluid can flow through the conduit (3e) to cool a second fluid such as transformer oil which can pass through inlet (5) and chamber (4) of a head section (2a, 2b) and through channels (3f) defined by partitions or baffles (3g), the cooled fluid leaving the body (3) through a similar head section arrangement at the other end. Further cooling can be achieved by air or other fluid passing over the fins (3c) on the exterior of the heat exchanger (1). In an alternative embodiment the head sections (2a, 2b) are blanked off, the extensions (3a, 3b) are omitted and a single fluid flows both through the inlet (5) and the body (3), the cooling being supplied solely by the passage of fluid over the exterior of the heat exchanger (1). In that embodiment the size and profile of the fins (3c) can be enhanced.</p> |
