The fabric covering roof, for a convertible automobile, is moved between a closed position (4) and a stowed position. The roof linkage (2) has a number of sections to support the roof cover (3). A folder (5) bears against the fabric roof (5) to impose a defined fold in it when the roof is moved from the closed position (4) into the stowed position. The folder (5) is a pressure rod with a soft bending action, which is straight when the roof is closed and bends as the roof is opened. As the fabric roof (3) is moved into the stowed position, the folding rod (5) forms an obstacle in its path to impose a fold in it. The folder (5) bears against the fabric roof (3) from the interior of the automobile.
