An escalator, wherein an interval between an upper chord material (14) and a lower chord material (15) of a pair of right and left side frame bodies (13A) and (13B) which constitute a main frame (8) for the base of the escalator is made wider, over a distance ranging from the inclined part (C) of the main frame (8) to upper and lower horizontal parts (A) and (B), than an interval between an upper chord material (14) and a lower chord material (15) of the side frame bodies (13A) and (13B) of the main frame (8) at both end parts, whereby the side frame bodies (13A) and (13B) of which intervals between the upper and lower side parts have been increased can maintain the strength throughout the entire area of the main frame (8) and eliminate various types of problems caused by the insufficient strength of the main frame (8) because these side frame bodies are reinforced in vertical direction.
