Process for the purification of a low molecular isocyanate, comprises addition of an oligomeric organic polyphosphate compound and heating for ten minutes below 200 deg C. A process for the purification of a low molecular isocyanate (I) comprises mixing (I) with at least 0.1% of a compound (II) of formula (1), optionally with an inert solvent for 10 minutes below 200 deg C followed by removal of (II) and/or high molecular reaction products, optionally by means of distillation or extraction. n = 1-20; R = 1-20C alkylene, cycloalkylene, aralkylene or a bifunctional aryl, optionally containing O, S or N atoms and/or other functional groups within the carbon chain; X = H, OH, SH, O-R<1>, O-Si(R<1>)3, F, Cl, Br, I or formula (2)-(5); R<1> = 1-20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, optionally containing O, S or N atoms and/or other functional groups and containing terminal functional groups such as NCO.
