A magneto-optical disk recorder or player includes control means for controlling the emission level of the laser light from a pick up (7). Ambient temperature detection means, connected with the control means, measures the temperature around a disk (6) and produces temperature information, and it produces a detection signal if the ambient temperature exceeds a normal temperature range. A memory (5) stores laser light levels corresponding to ambient temperature. Upon receiving a detection signal during a record or reproduce operation, the control means reads a laser level corresponding to the ambient temperature from the memory (5) to supply the pickup (7).
