A discharge lamp lighting device for lighting a discharge lamp (5c) within a discharge lamp load circuit (5) by converting a direct current supplied from a direct current power source (1) into a high frequency current by an inverter circuit (2) and using the high frequency current, comprising a current detecting circuit (6) for detecting a current supplied to the discharge lamp load circuit (5), a reference voltage circuit (14) for outputting a plurality of different reference voltages, an error amplifier (9) for producing a control signal based on an output from the current detecting circuit (6) and an output from the reference voltage circuit (14), an inverter driving circuit (3) for controlling the inverter circuit (2), based on the control signal from the error amplifier (9), to regulate the current to be supplied to the discharge lamp load circuit (5), and reference voltage selecting means (19) for selecting a reference voltage output from the reference voltage circuit (14).
