A laser oscillator with a small resonator loss which is capable of using a solid gain medium without highly polish. A solid gain medium (1) is contained in a transparent container (3) in a manner such that the solid gain medium (1) is immersed in liquid (2) having a refractive index matching a refractive index of the solid gain medium (1). When excitation light (50) is radiated to the transparent container (3), the solid gain medium (1) is laser-excited, laser oscillation starts in an optical resonator constituted by a rear mirror M1 and an output mirror M2, and a laser beam S' is outputted from the output mirror M2. Since the solid gain medium (1) is immersed in the index matching liquid (2), scattering of the light on a boundary face is suppressed even when the solid gain medium has a rough surface. By circulating the index matching liquid (2) using a circulating cooling device (8), a rise in temperature inside and outside the transparent container (3) is prevented. <IMAGE> |
