The inventive method is used for measuring the variation in the acid concentration or base concentration of aqueous solutions (12). To this end, the variation in volume of a body (4; 16) which can swell or shrink in water and which is immersed in the aqueous solution to be measured is measured and is placed in relation to the acid concentration or base concentration of the aqueous solutions (12). The inventive method makes it possible to continuously measure the variation in the acid concentration or base concentration of aqueous solutions, especially to measure the acid density and to display the charge state of lead accumulators.
