A resilient model 12 of an article of manufacture, such as an earth-boring drill bit body or component thereof, is fabricated by layered manufacturing techniques, such as selective layer sintering, stereolithography, three-dimensional printing, laminated object manufacturing. The resilient model 12 may then be employed to cast one or mould 410 from a refractory material (e.g. castable ceramics). The material may be applied to model 12 by dipping the model in a slurry of the material, by spraying onto the model 12, by placing the model into a container and pouring the material around the model 12, in paste form to the exposed surfaces of the model 12, by blowing in paste form onto the model etc. The material is then hardened. The moulds may then be used to fabricate the modeled article of manufacture (e.g. earth-boring drill bit of molten steel).The model 12 may be made of elastomeric material. |
