A compressor, intended especially for air conditioning in a vehicle, comprising a housing (1) and, inside the latter, a compressor unit (2) to suck up and compress a refrigerant which flows from an intake area located preferably in a front-end housing cover (3) through the compressor unit (2) into a pump down area (3), is designed so as to ensure increased efficiency to such an extent that the elements which are in contact with the refrigerant, preferably the walls forming the flow path between the intake area (4) and the pump out area (5), are therrno-insulated with respect to the refrigerant, at least to some extent and in some areas. For a safe protection of the belt in the event that the motor or the compressor unit gets stuck, the compressor is designed so as to enable automatic decoupling by the coupler device if the threshold value of the thermal and/or mechanical charge is exceeded.
