PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop an engine of a vehicle at idling to reduce an emission amount of exhaust gas during idling, without requiring driver's troublesome operations. SOLUTION: This exhaust gas suppression device has a switch means 15, a timer means 18 and a changeover relay 20. When a driver steps on a brake pedal 17, the brake pedal 17 engages with the switch means 15 to close a contact 15A of the switch means 15, while the timer means 18 measures the on/off time of the switch means 15. When a current-carrying state of the switch means 15 continues for a prescribed time, for example five minutes or longer, the timer means 18 operates the changeover relay 20 to turn off an ignition circuit 5, so that the engine of a vehicle is forcibly stopped. When the restart of the engine is required, the engine is restarted with a restart switch 25 installed to a steering wheel or the like.
