PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an epoxy resin having high heat-resistance and low hygroscopicity when cured and low viscosity when melted by reacting, simultaneously, a novolak resin and a triphenylmethane resin with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. SOLUTION: A novolak resin of formula I and a triphenylmethane resin of formula II are used. In the formulas, (m) and (n) are each 0-7. The novolak resin preferably has a softening point of 100-110 deg.C and a melt viscosity at 150 deg.C of 1.0-2.0 Poise. The triphenylmethane resin preferably has a softening point of 110-120 deg.C and a melt viscosity of 5-10 Poise. An alkali metal hydroxide is added to the melt blend of the novolak resin and the triphenylmethane resin. The reaction is carried out at 20-120 deg.C for 1-10 hr after or during the addition. An aprotic solvent is preferably used.
