PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the subject compound in high efficiency by which the reaction time can be shortened and a generated acidic waste fluid can be reduced by reducing a diazonium salt by hypophosphorous acid in the presence of a metal compound in a mixed medium comprising water and an organic solvent. SOLUTION: A derivative of formula I (R1 is an alkylcarbonyl, an arylcarbonyl, an alkylsulfonyl or the like; R2 is H, or an alkyl; X- is an anion), e.g. a diazonium salt of n-butyl 5-acetyl-3-amino-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrothieno[3,2- c]pyridine-2-carboxylate, is reduced by hypophosphorous acid in the presence of a metal compound (preferably metal copper or a monovalent or divalent copper compound) in a mixed medium comprising water and an organic solvent to provide the objective derivative of formula II. As a result, the objective compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a compound having platelet aggregation-inhibiting activities such as ticlopidine hydrochloride can be efficiently obtained.
