PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the easy exploration of petroleum, etc., in high accuracy. SOLUTION: The presence of petroleum or natural gas under the sea bottom is judged by the detection of a hydrocarbon-assimilating bacteria in the seawater collected at the sea bottom. The detection of hydrocarbon in seawater usable as an important index for the exploration of underground petroleum and natural gas is easily performed compared with conventional method.
