PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a therapeutic agent for impaired glucose tolerance effective in preventing and delaying the onset of non-insulin-dependent type diabetes mellitus(NIDDM) by including pioglitazone. SOLUTION: This therapeutic agent is obtained by including pioglitazone 5-[4-[2-(5-ethylpyridin-2-yl)ethoxy]benzyl]thiazolidine-2,4-dione}. In addition to the above compound, the inclusion of even a compound represented by formula I (R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-5C alkyl; R3 is H, a 1-6C aliphatic acyl or the like; R4 and R5 are each H, a 1-5C alkoxy or the like; n is 1-3; W is CH2 or the like; Y and Z are each O or imino), formula II [R11 is a (substituted)alkyl, a (substituted)alkoxy or the like; L1 and L2 are each H, a lower alkyl or the like], formula III (R15 and R16 are each H, a 1-6C alkyl, a 1-6C alkoxy or the like; n is 0-4) or formula IV (the dotted line is bonded or unbonded; V is CH=C or the like; D is CHOH or the like; X is CH or N; Z is H, phenyl or the like; Z is H or the like; n is 1-3) is effective in preventing or delaying the onset of NIDDM. |
