PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alkyl iodide from iodine, an alcohol and red phosphorus, making it possible to efficiently and industrially produce the alkyl iodide in good profitability and safety by adding water to a reaction solvent. SOLUTION: This method for producing an alkyl iodide comprises using iodine, an alcohol (having the same carbon chain as that of the target alkyl iodide), and red iodine. Therein, water is added to a reaction solvent. The alcohol and the red phosphorus are used in amounts of 1-1.5 equivalents and 0.2-0.3 equivalent, respectively, per atomic mole of the iodine. The water is used in a volume of preferably 5-20 ml, more preferably 10-15 ml, per mole of the iodine atom. The alkyl iodide is preferably produced by a method comprising mixing the iodine, the alcohol and the red phosphorus in a reaction solvent containing water and then distilling off the water from the reaction system, or by a method comprising adding the suspension of the red phosphorus to a solution containing the iodine and the alcohol.
