PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact catalytic filter material capable of highly removing hardly decomposable COD components without arranging a pretreatment device and also reducing treatment cost and building cost and a method for treating hardly decomposable COD-containing waste water. SOLUTION: A contact catalytic filter material 10 is obtained by coating the surface of internally porous granular ceramic with an apparent specific gravity of 0.9-1.4, of which the surface covered with a glassy film 12, with a coating layer 13 comprising manganese dioxide and the apparent specific gravity thereof after coating is set to 1.05-1.6. Hardly decomposable COD- containing waste water is treated by passing this waste water through a reaction tower packed with this contact catalytic filter material 10 dounwardly while ozone is injected into the lower part of the reaction tower. Since the contact catalytic filter material is low in specific gravity, it can be easily washed at a usual water backwashing speed.
