PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the moisture absorption/desorption property of a tatami mat, to prevent the occurrence of mildew and mites, to improve gas adsorption property, heat insulation property and heat retaining property and to make the living space comfortable by laminating a protective material inserted with diatomaceous earth on the upper face of a tatami board to form a tatami base. SOLUTION: A protective material 2 is laminated on the upper face of a tatami board 1 made of an insulation board, foam styrol or straw, a back face layer 9 is laminated on the lower face to form a tatami base 3, and a tatami facing 4 is laminated on the surface to form a tatami mat 5. Air-permeable sheets 8 made of a nonwoven fabric, a woven fabric or protective paper are arranged above and below to form a bag section 8a by sticking, deposition or sewing, and diatomaceous earth 6 is filled in it to form the protective material 2. The surface of the air-permeable sheet 8 may be coated with diatomaceous earth 6 to form a diatomaceous earth layer, or the air-permeable sheet 8 may be impregnated with paste-like diatomaceous earth 6, or a wooden split raw material, diatomaceous earth 6 and a binder may be kneaded to form the protective material 2. The moisture absorption/desorption property of the tatami mat 5 is improved, and the occurrence of mildew and mites can be prevented.
