PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition having excellent safety, high efficacy and also a wide antimicrobial spectrum, and useful for antiseptic, fungicidal or algicidal treatment of various industrial products and raw materials for industrial use, by including a specific isothiazoline compound and glutaraldehyde. SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by including (A) 2-n-octyl-4- isothiazoline-3-one and (B) glutaraldehyde, in the weight ratio of pref. (20:1) to (1:20), more pref. (5:1) to (1:5). The total content of the ingredients A and B included in the composition is pref. 0.2 to 60 wt.%. The amount of this composition to be used in cooling water, water-based coating materials, emulsion coating materials, etc., is normally around 1-10,000 mg/kg. This composition is effective against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
