PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently absorb harmful materials such as NOx and to decompose them with the photocatalytic action while suppressing the degradation of an organic material by supporting photocatalytic titanium oxide on a carrier composed of porous whiskers having a specified range of BET surface area by the nitrogen adsorption method. SOLUTION: The photocatalytic whiskers used as an environmental purification material to perform the removal of the malodor or the harmful material in the air or waste water treatment are prepared by supporting the photocatalytic titanium oxide on the carrier composed of the porous whiskers having a BET specific surface area S ml (m2/g) of 10-300 by the nitrogen adsorption method. The photocatalytic whiskers are prepared to satisfy relations, 1<=dw1<=1,000 (μm), 0.01<=dw2<=50 (μm) and 5<=dw1/dw2<=100, where dw1 represents the average major diameter (μm) of the photocatalytic whiskers, dw2 represents the average minor diameter (μm) of the photocatalaytic whiskers and dw1/dw2 represents the aspect ratio.
